Harrison Miller has been the principal bassoonist of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra since 2021; he was appointed to his position after joining the orchestra as acting principal bassoon in 2017, at the age of 22. Additional guest work includes performances with the New York Philharmonic, Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, American Ballet Theatre, Orchestra of St. Luke’s, Louisville Orchestra, and the American Symphony Orchestra.

Harrison received his Bachelor of Music from The Juilliard School in 2017, where he studied with Judith LeClair. In addition to receiving a Kovner Fellowship, Harrison was the winner of Juilliard’s 2017 Peter Mennin Prize for outstanding achievement and leadership in music, and the 2015 Bassoon Concerto Competition. Summer festival participation includes the Aspen Music Festival and School as a New Horizons Fellow, the Tanglewood Music Center, the Music Academy of the West, and the Sarasota Music Festival.

A devoted chamber musician, Harrison studied with the New York Woodwind Quintet as a member of their former Juilliard seminar. He has performed in New York’s annual ChamberFest, masterclasses at the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, and in a woodwind quintet with members of the New York Philharmonic for their Very Young People’s Concerts. Harrison performs frequently with his Baltimore Symphony colleagues in Community Concerts at Second, a free chamber music concert series presented by Baltimore’s Second Presbyterian Church. Harrison is currently on faculty for the Festival of Winds at Hidden Valley.

During his undergraduate degree, Harrison was the teaching assistant for Marc Goldberg at the Juilliard Pre-College. He led reed-making classes, assisted in lessons, mentored students in orchestra, and coached chamber music. Harrison now maintains his own private studio, and frequently leads sectionals for both the Baltimore Youth Symphony Orchestra and Howard County Youth Orchestra. Harrison is currently on faculty for the Festival of Winds at Hidden Valley and has previously taught and performed at the Philadelphia International Music Festival and the Interlochen Arts Camp. Harrison has presented masterclasses at the Juilliard School, University of Toronto, and the University of North Carolina Greensboro.

Harrison and his fiancée, BSO Assistant Concertmaster Holly Jenkins, love living in the cultural heart of their city in Mount Vernon, Baltimore. Together they have amassed an impressive, and at times overwhelming, collection of pets. Their two cats, Leo and Sully, and two dogs, Ellie and Ivy, keep them very entertained and very busy.
